COUNSELLING IN DONCASTER, SOUTH YORKSHIRE AND ONLINE

The ‘Google’ syndrome – careful it’s highly contagious!

There is nothing as important and valuable as having good health.  It's wonderful we have an ability to be in touch with our bodies and minds to know when we are starting to become ill and encounter a decline in physical and mental health.  This can enable us to seek diagnosis and then treatment.

There are a number of ways to do this, one of which I encounter frequently with my clients and that is the 'google' method.  Taking our symptoms, changes in health, behavior and mood and then inputting them into a search engine to identify what we 'have' or 'may have'

Whist this can seem helpful and provide an almost instant answer and we are intending to help ourselves by doing this, it often doesn't work.  It can provide misdiagnosis, a reduced likelihood of seeking further medical input and even individuals assuming they have a condition they may not even have.

I relate to wanting to know what's happening to my health, particularly when I am worried about and trying to ease some anxieties.  But to self diagnose in this way can be harmful and cause a huge amount of stress and worry.

It's still best to contact a health professional in such situations.  Your local GP, a foot specialist, physio, ear nurse, dentist to name a few.  Resist the urge to spend time online self diagnosing but seek the help and support you require from any health specialist you feel can support you.
